The petiole attaches the leaf to the twig. This can be a little confusing when looking at petiole, rachis and petiolule. The Fraxinus americana (White Ash) in the image is an example of a pinnately compound leaf. The leaflets attach along the rachis like a feather. Pinnate is actually Latin for feather. Another type of compound leaf we will discover this semester are palmately compound leaves.
