When I started college, the first day was nerve-wracking; with no precise info from the college on where the freshers are supposed to report, I had to ask for directions from seniors who were supposedly known for ragging. I pursued an I.T. stream in engineering at a very reputed college, which is also considered among the top 3 colleges affiliated to a massive university. Things went well, and I reached the building, but then again, not always things go smoothly; little did I know what horrors awaited me in my first year of college. Before I knew it, six months passed, and we were waiting on our results for the external exams. At this point, I was surrounded by seniors in different departments of the cultural society of my college. I realized that people don't like it if you are nice to everyone, especially if they don't like that specific person. My cultural society was a mess of political drama enacted at the college level. At the same time, my seniors started to force me on what I should and should not be doing when interacting with other seniors, and the struggle to understand why I wasn't scoring as high as my peers became a headache. It felt like everything was crashing down, and my life was a mess. The results were in for my exams and I couldn't understand what was wrong with my external exam answers. With time I started to lose motivation; during the end of my second semester, I had enough negativity to make me drop out of college and go somewhere else.<\/p>\n"},"library":"H5P.AdvancedText 1.1","metadata":{"contentType":"Text","license":"U","title":"Untitled Text"},"subContentId":"7bd64c34-3613-4df5-948d-c06e3afabab1"},"title":"The Wicked Problem"},{"content":{"params":{"text":"

How did I solve my problems? Let's start with the issue of the mark first. I knew that studying at the college level was different from school, and you are expected to write the answer in a different pattern. A particular structured reply is expected from you. So, what I started to do was, before every exam, I would find the question papers of the previous ten years and analyze the patterns in what were the critical topics on which there were questions in almost every exam and how their answers were expected. This significantly divided my workload and helped me manage time; I knew where I was supposed to pay more attention and where not. I also started making appointments to ask my professors how to frame my answers. We had different subjects every six months, so different answer structures were expected; this put me on the same level as my peers; I was able to score high all of a sudden. Though I wasn't failing any grade before that, I realized that communication is a huge hurdle that I was reluctant to cross. But when I did, life took away a lot of anxiety and pressure from me. With this knowledge, I thought I would solve the ongoing crisis with my seniors, who were constantly at war with each other. I tried to communicate with them, which ultimately backfired on me. They did not want to speak, and they had no intention of ending their pointless rivalry with each other. They enjoyed the tension they had created with each other, and it didn't take me much time to figure out that I was the only one being hurt in the crossfire between them. There was no growth for me in my cultural society, and when it came to my college's participation in intercollege competitions, it didn't matter if you were good or bad; only the seniors in the managerial body of the society would participate. With a heavy heart, I decided to leave my cultural club. Toxicity is not a part of life, and one must learn to let go of people who are the embodiment of negativity themselves. After about six months, I discovered that the chemistry department (which regulated the cultural society) almost dissolved the community because students had unruly behavior. This thing happened multiple times, and even I got to witness a scene once during their practice session when I was out in the field sitting with my friends. Did I lose anything by quitting the cultural society? No! It is imperative to identify what, why, where, and how of any problem you face in life. Before attempting or doing anything, ask yourself, does what you are doing affect your life anyway? Have a clear goal in mind; if you do something mindlessly, the results will never provide you the satisfaction that you seek. Making efforts is a good thing, but wasted efforts only lead to negativity, and with time it gets more and more difficult to change if it becomes a habit. It's in human nature to make things even more complex than they already are, know this and try to keep things simple.
