My entire fourth year of university was online. As an engineering student we always had multiple group projects every semester that took team collaboration to be successful. In fourth year the biggest group project came around that everyone talks about throughout all the four years...capstone!<\/p>\n\n

Capstone is a major group project where we were teamed up with an industrial partner and asked to solve a problem they give to us throughout the year. I was the team leader for my capstone project and faced the issue of being the only one that would contribute in online meetings. My team members would be in the online meeting with their cameras and their mics off, leaving only me to speak. Often I would ask for their advice and they wouldn't care to answer. They just wanted me to make the decisions and for them to do the easy work. If this were in person, people would not have the choice to turn their cameras and mic off and sit back and agree with everything. In person there would be collaboration between the team members because that is how human interaction works. The lack of participation in the online environment really frustrated me. This was a barrier that never was resolved throughout my time in online schooling.<\/p>\n\n

I did bring it up to my team members to be more collaborative, but you cannot make someone change, they need to decide to change themselves. The thing that helped me the most was telling myself that is just how those people are, and that it doesn't have anything to do with me. I am the one out here collaborating with them and working hard which will pay off in the future. If you are reading this and are experiencing this same frustration you can always also bring it up to the professor if it is that bad. In university you may be stuck in group projects where the members do not collaborate well.
