The SCC is the highest court in the Canadian court system and the final court of appeal. This has earned it the name of the \"court of last resort.\"<\/p>\n\n

The Supreme Court hears appeals from every provincial or territorial court of appeal, as well as from the Federal Court of Appeal and the Court Martial Appeal Court.<\/p>\n\n

Each province or territory has its own series of courts including the following. Names of each court level vary by jurisdiction. <\/p>\n\n

Inferior courts:<\/strong> the lowest level of court, which have limited jurisdiction and typically hear only specific types of cases (e.g. bankruptcy). <\/li>\n\t
Superior courts: <\/strong>trial-level courts that hear cases in all areas. Names vary by province\u2014look for \"Superior Court\" (e.g. Ontario Superior Court), \"Court of King's Bench\" (e.g. Alberta Court of King's Bench), or \"Supreme Court\" (e.g. BC Supreme Court). <\/li>\n\t
Courts of appeal: <\/strong>The highest court in the provincial\/territorial system (e.g. Ontario Court of Appeal). Federal courts have jurisdiction over federal matters such as immigration, intellectual property, aboriginal law, national security, and maritime law. Like the provincial\/territorial courts, it includes a lower court (Federal Court) and a court of appeal (Federal Court of Appeal). <\/p>\n\n
Appeals from the Tax Court of Canada are also heard by the Federal Court of Appeal.<\/p>\n\n

Military courts are presided over by independent military judges. Administrative boards and tribunals are not courts of law; rather, they are delegated authorities responsible for settling disputes about the interpretation and application of a specific law. As a result, their decisions are only binding on the parties involved.<\/p>\n\n
These decisions can be reviewed by court through judicial review<\/strong>.
