There are two ways to incorporate ideas into your final report:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n

direct quotations, which require quotation marks<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
paraphrasing, which involves rewording the idea but still citing it<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
Note that when you are quoting an article quoting someone else, you cite the article you read the information in and admit that one article is quoting another. Most students have incorporated direct quotations into an essay. In a business report, often only short direct quotations will be used (less than 50 words). In this case, incorporate the direct quotation into the grammatical structure of your sentence.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Example of using a direct quote within a sentence:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Neighbourhood conflicts may be approached more effectively through the \u201cpsychological processes relevant to problem-solving.\u201d (Nairne, 2004, 8)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Note: In this example, only the direct quotation is in quotation marks, although it appears in the middle of the sentence. The citation (inside the brackets) comes at the end of the sentence and is the author\u2019s last name, the year the book or article was written, and the page number the direct quote appears on the original published work.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
You could have also incorporated this information into your report by using a \u2018signal phrase.\u2019 This is a phrase that indicates a direct quote is coming up. (Note that you can also use a signal phrase when paraphrasing. In fact, you likely should).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Paraphrasing is the art of putting an author\u2019s idea into your own words but giving that author credit for his or her ideas. <\/strong>Paraphrasing often makes it easier for the reader of your report to follow the idea being presented - and it demonstrates an understanding of the researched idea by you, the author of the report.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
When paraphrasing, you must introduce the author\u2019s name as part of your sentence then include only the publication date in the citation or include the author\u2019s name, publication, and date in the citation following the paraphrased sentence.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

According to Greg Keenan of The Globe and Mail, Ford Motor Co. of Canada donated $3 million to St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario, in an effort to address a shortage of skilled auto workers. (2000).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Cite the source from which you are getting your information. For example, if there is a quote from a government official within an article published in The Globe and Mail, cite The Globe and Mail as your source.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Example of quoting a quote:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n
The Globe and Mail reported that new legislation would allow police in Ontario \u201cto seize the assets from suspected organized criminals. As a government source explained, \u2018If you are the victim of organized crime, then you would have the opportunity to apply for some of that money.\u2019\u201d (Pascal, 2000)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The information in the brackets after any information you took from another source is called an 'in-text citation.'<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n
The point of the information is to allow the reader to find the exact reference (article or research source) in the bibliography at the end of the report.
