When and where you have your conversation can be important. A carefully chosen location can help minimize a power imbalance, prevent distractions, and avoid interruptions. One of the benefits of preparing a context statement is that it can provide the other person with an opportunity to help choose the setting. <\/p>\n\n

A colleague shared how intimidating it was to be offered a tiny seat in the corners of an office dominated by the presence of their supervisor\u2019s huge desk. This magnified the power imbalance made it much harder to have a comfortable conversation. <\/p>\n\n

When you are preparing for your conversation, consider carefully when and where it will take place. In Part 5, you learned about creating a Context Statement. Review this module if needed to consider how to best extend an invitation to the other person to have a conversation. Remember, the key goals are to communicate that you care about your relationship with the other person and you want to understand their perspective. It can also be helpful to remind the other person of things that have gone well in the past. Sometimes an issue may seem so complex that when you consider having a difficult conversation about it, you don\u2019t know where to start. Take time to make sure the issue is clear in your own mind before you begin the conversation.<\/p>\n\n

It can sometimes be helpful to talk the issue through with someone you trust. In addition, staff in the Conflict Management Office can help you process your thoughts and separate a complex issue into several key points. <\/p>\n\n

You may have more or less key points than this diagram indicates. The number of points is not important. It can be helpful to consider ahead of time how you might communicate impact during your conversation. As we discussed in Part 2, the intention is to tell the person how their behavior impacted you without labelling them or labelling their behavior. Preparation can help you consider what wording may be more or less effective and boost your confidence going into the conversation. The \u201cI\u201d statement model can be used as a guide, feel free to modify the model to fit your needs, but always double check that your focus in on communicating impact. It is important to acknowledge that you may not fully understand the other person's perspective. Put aside any assumptions that you have about them as a person, their motives, and their situation. Then, seek understanding.

\nWhen we ask questions rather than making statements, we also send the message that we care about the other person and want to resolve the situation in a way that meets everyone\u2019s needs. When asking questions, it is important to really listen \u2013 Don\u2019t let assumptions or thoughts of how you will respond distract you.<\/p>\n\n
A helpful practice is to periodically summarize what the other person has said and ask them to confirm whether you have understood correctly.
