Developing a search strategy for finding sources with a tool like Omni (Trent\u2019s Library search tool) is a crucial step in finding the sources that are most relevant to your research topic or question. <\/p>\n\n
Strategically searching with a tool like Omni involves creating keywords. Another term for keywords is \u201csearch terms.\u201d These are words or phrases that represent the essence of your topic - what your research is about. They serve as the building blocks for searching in search tools like Omni, since these tools search for sources that contain the exact words you type into the search bar. Keywords act as a bridge between your research needs and the information that is available.<\/p>\n\n
Understanding the importance of keywords means recognizing their role in filtering and refining search results, which leads to a more targeted and fruitful research outcome. As can be seen in the video above, choosing keywords plays an important role in determining the number of results you get. It is also a good idea to identify relevant synonyms, because researchers\/academic authors tend to use language differently. As an example, Canadians frequently refer to soft drinks as \"pop\", but in other countries, the term \"soda\" might be more commonly used. Therefore, it is always a good idea to remember this when using Omni to search for the types of resources we're interested in, as one search we conduct might give us very few results, when there's actually a lot of material on a topic if we had simply included some other synonyms.<\/p>\n\n
Furthermore, as illustrated in the video above, the more keywords you use in your search, the narrower your search will be (the less results you will get). As such, you need to strike a balance between how broad or narrow you want your search to be. Later on in this module, we will also talk about how you can use filters to further narrow down our search results.<\/p>\n\n

Searching in Omni, Trent's Library Search Tool<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
Now that you have some knowledge on how to broaden and narrow your topic, we'll switch gears and focus on Omni, the \u201csearch engine\u201d for the Trent University Library & Archives.<\/p>\n\n
One nice thing about Omni is that it is a user-friendly search engine. For instance, the Basic Search interface in Omni resembles that of most popular search engines (like Google).<\/p>\n\n
But Omni goes even further. Because it's searching library material, it has access to library metadata, which is extremely detailed information about the material.<\/p>\n\n
That means Omni can provide detailed descriptions of what it finds, allowing you to filter your results and see clear indications of what kinds of material you're being shown. Omni separates scholarly material from non-academic items, and ensures no \"scammers\" are providing fake articles. (Yes - there are scammers who create \"predatory\" journals!)<\/p>\n\n

After you click \"search\", you'll see a list of sources that Omni has found using your keywords. You can click on a source to see more information about it. You can also use even more filters to further narrow down the number of search results. Once you've performed a search, used filters, and found the resource you're looking for, click on the source's title to access it. When you click, a new window pops up with a lot more information about the resource, as well as a link to access the resource (for electronic resources) or the location of the resource in the Library (for print\/physical resources).<\/p>\n\n
This is called a resource record<\/strong> in Omni.<\/p>\n\n
One of the benefits of Omni is that, in addition to giving us a solid number of options to filter our results, it does a fairly good job of collecting and displaying important information about the resource.<\/p>\n\n

Access Electronic (Online) Resources in Omni<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
Now that you've found the article, eBook, or other source you want to use, how do you access it from the Omni search?<\/p>\n\n
That part's easy!<\/p>\n\n
Articles, eBooks, and other resources are stored in databases<\/strong>. The Library subscribes to these databases to provide access to these resources. Omni searches through these databases to find the resources you're looking for based on the keywords you enter into the search. It then provides links to the resources if they're available online, or the location of the resources if they're on Bata's physical shelves. <\/p>\n\n
You'll find the links to articles, eBooks, and other online resources in resource record under the heading \"View Online.\" <\/p>\n\n
You may see multiple links under the \"View Online\" heading. You can click any of these links to access the resource. These links go to different databases that all hold this same resource.<\/p>\n\n
Different databases have different functionalities. Many databases will allow you to download a PDF of an article. Some databases have a read aloud function. <\/p>\n\n

Access Print (Physical) Resources in Omni<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
Understanding how to access and utilize print resources in a library is a valuable skill to have. There will likely be instances where the library simply does not have access to a resource online, and older resources for certain disciplines, such as history, tend to be more readily available in physical print format.<\/p>\n\n
Libraries typically organize their print materials using a classification system, such as the Dewey Decimal System (mostly used by public libraries) or the Library of Congress Classification System (mostly used by academic libraries). These systems group similar subjects together to facilitate easy location of materials.<\/p>\n\n
The majority of print books in Trent's collection are kept on shelves on the third floor of Bata Library. This area is called the Stacks<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n
Books in the Stacks are organized by subject using the Library of Congress Classification System.<\/p>\n\n
Each book has a unique call number<\/strong> on its spine. A call number is a series of numbers and letters that looks like this:<\/p>\n\n
PS3552 .A5 G6 1995<\/strong><\/a> - This is the call number for the novel Go Tell It on the Mountain<\/em> by James Baldwin. <\/p>\n\n
QH313.5 .F67 N66 2008<\/strong><\/a> - This is the call number for the nonfiction book Nonhuman DNA Typing: Theory and Casework Applications<\/em> by Heather Miller Coyle.<\/p>\n\n
A call number is a bit like a book's address: it tells you where the book is located on the shelves. Books on the same subject will be near each other on the shelves, and will have similar (but not identical) call numbers.<\/p>\n\n
