If we look around our own communities, we will find \u2018average citizens\u2019 who are actively working to make a difference in the lives of others and\/or their communities. These aren\u2019t politicians or high-profile people. They are our neighbours, seniors, young professionals, parents and students \u2013 people like you and me. But they are people who care, and who are motivated to make change in some way.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

  Your task is to seek out and interview someone who dedicates their time and energy to making a positive change in their community, using questions that you have prepared in advance. You will then report on your interview and reflect on the experience and your learning.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
  Please note: This is not<\/strong> an internet research assignment.   Your \u2018interviewee\u2019 can be someone you already know or someone you seek an introduction to, but it must be someone who volunteers their time and energy to a particular issue or cause. If you are not already familiar with someone like this, try searching the websites of local charities that have a volunteer board of directors, look to a local Rotary Club, Lion\u2019s Club, Women\u2019s Institute or other groups who work in communities, or even read your local newspaper for stories of such people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
  Important Note: <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
  You cannot interview someone about their community work if that work is their primary role (job, vocation, political position, etc.) or if they get paid for this type of work. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
  For example, you cannot interview a personal support worker about the positive change they make in the lives of the senior citizens they visit as part of their job; or interview a religious leader or social worker about the positive change they make in the lives of those they counsel; or interview someone who works for a children\u2019s charity about how the lives of children are improved because of their work. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
  You can, however, interview someone like this about other community work they do that is not related to their primary role.   Interviews are meant to be interactive and \u2018live\u2019 \u2013 actual conversations.<\/span><\/span> As both students and volunteers tend to be very busy people, there are a number of ways you can interview your everyday changemaker:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

  In person<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
  Online video meeting<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
  Telephone call<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
  Interviews should be about 10-15 minutes long but can be longer if both you and the interviewee are comfortable with that.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
  Regardless of the way you communicate with the person you are interviewing, you will need to ensure that your communications are professional and respectful and that you are fully prepared with your questions in advance.   Once you and your interviewee have agreed on a date\/time\/format for the interview, prepare a list of potential questions in advance. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
  Your goal is to gather <\/span>thoughts and advice about what motivates the interviewee to be a volunteer their time to have a positive impact (what motivates them to be a changemaker), so consider where you are in your own life and career path and think about what you would personally like to learn or get advice about. This will make the experience more meaningful to you and deepen the level of conversation with your <\/span><\/span><\/span>interviewee<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
  Brainstorm a list of questions that are likely to<\/span> generate this<\/span><\/span><\/span> kind of<\/span><\/span><\/span> information, keeping in mind the person you are interviewing and the type of community involvement they have.<\/span><\/span><\/span> This <\/span><\/span><\/span>can<\/span><\/span><\/span> help you start the conversation and keep it going<\/span><\/span><\/span>. Your list should be a guide only, as you <\/span><\/span><\/span>will undoubtably think of different or better questions once you begin your conversation. <\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
  For example:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

  What motivates you to volunteer your time?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
  What do you do as a volunteer for this project\/activity? <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
  What made you decide to volunteer\/do this project\/activity? How did you get involved? How long do you think you will stay involved?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
  Why do you feel a commitment to or passionate about this particular cause\/issue?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
  What keeps you motivated\/involved?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
  What is the hardest part about volunteering\/doing this project\/activity?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
  What skills, abilities or characteristics do you need to call on most while doing your community work?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
  Have you volunteered before or led other community projects? What were they?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
  What are you most proud of in your community work?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
  Do you feel that you give enough time to your community, or would you like to give more? <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
  What advice would you give to someone who hasn\u2019t done any volunteering or community work, but would like to start?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
  This list is not exhaustive, and you do not need to use these questions at all. However, you should have 10-12 open-ended questions prepared before your interview.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> At the interview, it is good to open by thanking the person for their time<\/span><\/span><\/span> before beginning your questions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

  During the interview, it is also important to ask follow-up questions to clarify, confirm, or expand on the\u202finformation\u202fyou've received. <\/p>\n\n
  Listen carefully to the answer to your initial question and ask additional questions to keep the conversation going to learn more. You may find that one initial question leads to many others that were not on your list, and this is fine.
