Before we get started, you may have heard the Haudenosaunee Confederacy referred to by other names. Called the Iroquois Confederacy<\/strong> by the French, and the League of Five Nations<\/strong> by the English, the confederacy is properly called the Haudenosaunee Confederacy<\/strong> meaning People of the long house<\/strong> (Haudenosaunee Confederacy<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n\n
The confederacy originally included the Mohawk<\/strong>, Oneida<\/strong>, Onondaga<\/strong>, Cayuga<\/strong>, and Seneca <\/strong>and was intended to unite nations toward peaceful means of collective decision making. The Haldimand Tract was traditional territory of the Mississauga<\/strong> who sold the land to the British so the Six Nations and Loyalist settlers could flee the American Revolution and settle on the land surrounding the Grand River. This land purchase is still contested today.<\/strong><\/li>\n\t
On October 25, 1784, Quebec Governor Frederick Haldimand<\/strong> granted approximately 1 million acres to Mohawk peoples led by Joseph Brant<\/strong> (Thayendanegea<\/a>)<\/span><\/li>\n\t

When the military ally was no longer needed, preserving the land for the Six Nations was no longer beneficial, so the British administration approved and encouraged the encroachment of settlers.<\/span><\/li>\n\t
Six blocks were surrendered (contentiously) to the Crown on February 5, 1798<\/span><\/li>\n\t

The Covenant Chain<\/strong> was a series of agreements between British & Dutch administrations with the Haudenosaunee to preserve peace and stability, and encourage trade<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Wampum belts are beaded versions of living treaties that hold both spiritual and legal significance. The Two Row Wampum<\/strong> shows two lines moving together but never intersecting, symbolizing the agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Europeans to not interfere with each others' way of life.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Six Nations of the Grand River reopened their litigation case against Ontario and Canada that had been inactive since 1995 (Hill, 2009). <\/li>\n\t
Dispute originated when development company planned to use 40 hectares of land that was part of the Six Nations Grant from the Crown (Haldimand Tract) to create the Douglas Creek Estates Subdivision (Hill, 2009).<\/li>\n\t
Demonstrators took control of disputed land \u2013 Six Nations claimed that they had never relinquished their rights to this land .<\/li>\n\t
June 16, 2006 \u2013 Provincial Government purchased land from developers to hold in trust until this claim is settled (Hill, 2009). <\/li>\n\t
Ongoing protests include blockades, damage to rail lines, etc.
