The introduction to an argument (especially, but not exclusively, a written argument) typically includes the context of the argument, whether that's a historical context, social context, political context or maybe a theoretical or academic\/disciplinary context. This section generally answers the question why is this topic important right now? In academic arguments, we typically find the main claim or thesis of the argument here as well.  <\/p>\n\n

Claims are debatable statements. This means that they are not established facts, nor are they simply matters of personal opinion. They are the reasons why an author holds a belief and therefore could be seen as the bones of any argument.  <\/p>\n\n

The support of an agument is in the proof, explanation, expansion, illustration or discussion of the claims. This is the meat of the argument, hanging on the bones of the claims. Support is where you'll find the examples, the anecdotes or narratives, the research, the facts, and the logical reasoning behind the claims.<\/p>\n\n

Rebuttal, like claims, is specific to arguments. Other types of writing can include introductions, support, conclusions, etc., and all types of writing can include the patterns of organization. But only arguments include claims and rebuttal. This is where a writer includes the opposing point of view, either to show its weakness, or to state that even though the opposition has some good points, the author's thesis makes more sense or is more important. Rebuttal can strengthen an argument if done right, and is a very important aspect of any argument to notice as you're reading and critiquing it. <\/p>\n\n

All well-organized pieces of writing include conclusions, but in arguments, the conclusions tend to be stronger and more recognizable. They typically summarize the most important claims and support, and reiterate the main claim or thesis to hit the point home. In especially controversial arguments, the main claim or thesis might only appear in the conclusion, once the author has laid the groundwork for the reader to accept the claim. <\/p>\n\n
