When learning English, students can become used to the speaking patterns and accents of their teachers and classmates, but then have difficulty understanding people outside their learning environment because of different patterns and accents. Similarly, teachers and classmates become used to how you speak, and can understand your ideas even if there are inaccuracies in grammar, pronunciation and so on, but others may find this difficult. For these reasons, it is important to speak to as many different people as possible, especially people outside of your regular learning environment.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In 2023, your teacher, Donna Naylor and Corinne Whitney, the EAP Program Manager, travelled to Turkey to work with students and teachers at Bah\u00e7e\u015fehir University in Istanbul, and we have continued these international connections.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You will first create a short 2-3-minute video to introduce yourself and share some interesting detail related to your school or the town\/city where you are currently living.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Your teacher will forward these videos to the teacher(s) at Bah\u00e7e\u015fehir University<\/span>, who will show them to the students who are interested in meeting with you. If possible, the students in Istanbul will create similar videos to send here.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Week 6:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\n
The following week (week 6), you will have a live, online conversation with your Bah\u00e7e\u015fehir University <\/span>partner(s). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A. Create an Introductory Video<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n
Each SL-5 student will create his\/her own 2-3-minute introductory video and submit this as a shareable link. **<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
The purpose of this video is to introduce and share some information about yourself as well as show and explain some video images of Georgian College or the town\/city where you are currently living (a video tour), giving explanations while you are recording the scenes you wish to show.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
For the self-introduction part of the video, after telling your name, share some information you would like people to know about you. For example, you could talk about:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

where you are from\/where you grew up<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
your past education\/professional experience<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
something about EAP\/learning English<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t

Please only include information about yourself that you are willing to share. You do not need to give any personal details that you would like to keep private.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
For the \u2018tour\u2019 part of the video, you could show\/speak about any place you think would be of interest. For example: <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

B. Prepare Conversation Topics and Questions<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n
In preparation for the conversation you will have with your partner(s) at Bah\u00e7e\u015fehir University<\/span>, think of questions you would like to ask, or topics you would like to discuss. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Avoid very personal questions. If your partner(s) wish to share this type of information, that is fine, but it is important not to pry.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
Consider asking questions about their school, what their day is like, things you\u2019d like to know about the country or area where they live, the weather\/seasons, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
C. Meet Your Partner(s) Online<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n
During week 6, you will be partnered for live, online conversations, and you will take the lead to get the conversation going. You may or may not need your previously prepared topics, as you can talk about anything you and your partner(s) wish. You will be together for a minimum of 20 minutes, but if you and your partner(s) wish to continue beyond that time, you are welcome to do so. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
