To \u2018truncate\u2019 a word simply means to shorten it by removing one or more letters to go back to the root word. Truncating a word allows you to search for multiple variations of a word at once by adding the appropriate symbol (e.g., *<\/strong>) to the end of the root of the word.<\/p>\n\n

For example, to search for adolescent<\/strong>, adolescents<\/strong>, or adolescence<\/strong> we could use adolescen*<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n

Tips for using truncation:<\/p>\n\n

Be careful not to truncate the word too much. <\/strong>Truncating too many letters from a word can lead to results that are unrelated to your intended search term. For example, using the truncated word nurs*<\/em> will also bring back results about nurseries.<\/li>\n\t
Different databases may use different symbols for truncation.<\/strong> For example, in Ovid databases you can truncate using the asterisk symbol (*) or dollar sign ($) but in EBSCO databases you can only truncate using the asterisk symbol (*).<\/li>\n\t

A wildcard is a special character that replaces one or more letters in a word in order to search for multiple variations of the word. <\/p>\n\n
To use a wildcard, insert the wildcard symbol used by that database to replace the letter that may change.<\/p>\n\n
For example, if you do a search for pediatric and an article uses pa<\/strong>ediatric instead, that article won't be in your search results. Different databases may use different symbols for their wildcard.<\/strong> Common wildcard symbols used in different databases include questions marks (?), the pound sign (#), the dollar sign ($), the percentage symbol (%), and exclamation marks (!).<\/li>\n\t

Tips for using adjacency operators:<\/p>\n\n

Start with a smaller number first<\/strong>. It's best to start with only a few words in between (e.g., adj3) and to increase this number as needed.<\/li>\n\t
Only use adjacency operators when necessary<\/strong>. For example, when you know of a common phrase that you want included in your search. Also, look at your search results. Is the adjacency operator bringing in too many irrelevant results? In this case, leave it out.<\/li>\n\t
Different databases use different operators.<\/strong> For example, in EBSCO databases you would use N# (e.g., N3) and in Proquest databases you would use NEAR\/# (e.g., NEAR\/3).<\/li>\n\t
