The purpose of active listening is so you can learn information that you want or need. However, simply hearing and understanding what you hear is only part of the communication process. Being able to discuss and apply what you have learned is the key to continuous learning and development.<\/p>\n\n

On Monday, December 6, 2021<\/em><\/strong>, the level 8 class will be divided into two groups, and each group will hear a different guest lecturer. These lectures form the basis of this test.<\/p>\n\n

This test will challenge your active listening skills, your ability to understand and make connections with the information you hear, and to then clearly communicate these ideas to others. It will also challenge your ability to understand similar ideas presented by classmates and to reach a consensus on the key points that have been collectively learned.<\/p>\n\n

You will take notes of the lecture you hear, and you will have time to confer with your classmates to ensure that you have all of the information you need.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
Your notes will not be marked. However, you will use these as a reference for parts 2 and 3 of the test.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n

The lecture you hear will be delivered online via WebEx; the guest speaker will be live (not a video). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
Please use the regular class link to join. Once the class begins, you will be redirected to a breakout room to hear your assigned speaker.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t

Be sure to take notes while the guest speaks.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t<\/ul>\n\t<\/li>\n\t
At the end of the lecture, you will have an opportunity to ask questions, get clarification, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
After the question period, the guest speaker will disconnect from the meeting, but all students will remain online in the breakout room.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
At this time, you may compare your notes with the other students \u2013 get clarification of key points, check your understanding of information, add information you missed, etc. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t

You will work with the students who listened to the same presentation. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
Together, you will prepare a short summary of the lecture that you will later present to the students who heard the other lecture (during part 3 of the test).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t
\n\t\t
You will have access to a shared document where you can prepare an outline of your presentation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t\t
The use of this document is optional, but if it is used, be sure that everyone in the group can open and access the link. You cannot share your screen during the presentation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t<\/ul>\n\t<\/li>\n\t
During the presentation, each person must present part of the summary (everyone must speak), so determine this as well and practice your presentation. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n

Your summary presentation must meet these criteria:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
It must be no longer than 4 minutes and each person in the group must do an equal part of the presentation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
It must cover all of the most important ideas from the lecture.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
It must include key supporting details and ideas.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
It must have a strong opening, closing and well\u2013developed ideas.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

This is the part of the test that will be marked. <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n
During the third class hour, your group will join students who heard the other lecture. You will share the summary for your own lecture, hear the summary about the other lecture, and then discuss the content further. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
The goal of your discussion is to come up with a written pr\u00e9cis (summary) that captures:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
\n\t
the main message(s) that can be taken from the combined lecture information,<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
how this information\/learning can be applied to your future studies, career or everyday life. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
During your discussion, you should reflect on the information you heard and consider these ideas:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The similarities and differences of the experiences of the two guest speakers.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
The difficulties they had as they settled into a new country, using a new language.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
The strategies they used in the past and\/or are using now to be successful as language learners. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
The strategies they used to become part of their communities, to build relationships, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
The strategies they used to get a job in Canada and\/or to be successful as employees.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
Any advice they had for you as language learners.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
Format of the Presentation and Discussion:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n

4 minutes:         Group 1 summarizes the lecture they heard <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
4 minutes:         Group 2 summarizes the lecture they heard <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
40 minutes:       All students discuss information and prepare a written pr\u00e9cis.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
To help you prepare your written pr\u00e9cis, the teacher will provide you group with a link to a new shared document that must be used for this purpose. Your pr\u00e9cis should be no longer than 8-10 sentences. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Your group must complete your written pr\u00e9cis by the end of your allotted time and at that point, the shared document will no longer be available to you. The teacher will use this for the pr\u00e9cis part of the grading.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Your discussion will be recorded so the teacher can listen again while grading.
