The sliding filament theory revolves around the idea that contraction is a cycle of events (1). Which consist of myosin heads repeatly attaching and pulling on actin binding sites, leading to the two filments sliding over each other (1). This sliding causes the shortening of the sarcomere (a small unit of a muscle fiber), leading to contraction (1).<\/p>\n\t<\/li>\n\t

This cycle of de-attaching and re-attaching is powered by ATP (1). Myosin heads contain seperate binding sites for ATP and its products (1). Below are the steps of the cycle.<\/p>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

At the end of stage 2, the myosin head is attached to the actin binding site (1). At this point it had ADP and Pi bound to the head (1).<\/p>\n\t<\/li>\n\t

The second step of cycle is the powerstroke, where the myosin head pulls on the actin filament and then releases ADP and Pi (1).<\/p>\n\t<\/li>\n\t

ATP then binds to the myosin head to cock it back into its orginal position and is split into ADP and Pi (1). The myosin head is now ready to be attached to the next actin binding site (1).
