For this part of the project, consider issues that are important to you and where you would like to have an impact for positive change or look for organizations, events or other information that catches your interest. You may consider any cause or issue you like, as long as action can result in a positive impact on others.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
There are many, many issues and many, many ways to have a small, local impact, so this week, you will consider what is important to you and where you would like to have an impact for positive change. Brainstorm ideas, look for organizations, events or other information that catches your interest. You may consider any cause or issue you like, as long as action can result in a positive impact on others.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
During class, the teacher will lead students through a process to help everyone find others with similar interests and concerns, so that students can form teams. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
You may choose your own team, as long as the following criteria are met:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There must be a minimum of 3 people.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
There must be a minimum of 2 different first languages spoken by team members.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

Step 1: Find a Focus:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Together, your team will focus on what you can do during the course to have a positive impact on your larger cause. One approach is to follow the advice: Think globally, act locally.<\/span> So, what does this mean?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
You likely have concerns that affect many people or even the whole world, such as climate change, cancer or other diseases, food insecurity, gender equality, the housing crisis, etc. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
However, you cannot solve any of these issues on your own, or even with a small group of classmates. So, consider what action you and a few classmates can take \u2013 right now \u2013 to have a positive impact on the issue.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Some examples:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Issue:   Climate Change                     Possible Action:   Clean up a local river<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t

The possibilities are endless. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The main point is to choose something that interests you and that you can achieve in 3-4 weeks<\/span><\/span>. If the project or cause you are most interested in is too big for the time you have, consider what you can do to have an impact on some small part of this.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Step 2: Develop Your Plan of Action:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
The goal is to create a plan of action that can be fully completed in 3-4 weeks. Your team will use a variety of tools to develop your ideas and reasoning for your project. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Specifically, your team will:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Analyze the situation and summarize the problem\/situation that you want to address (in your own words; include inferences)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
Identify points of view to consider<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
Brainstorm possible solutions<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
Consider the pros and cons of your solutions<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
Choose the solution you think is best<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
Once your team has determined the best solution, you will develop a work plan to implement your solution. Make your plan SMART \u2013 Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-based<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Once you have your idea and overall plan, your next task is to \u2018pitch\u2019 your idea to the teacher. This means that your group will meet with the teacher and give a short presentation of your overall issue\/concern, and what you plan to do to have a positive impact, including your key steps.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Your pitch must clearly identify:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

the problem to be solved<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
the solution desired<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
your team\u2019s SMART goal<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
the steps (and related details) that must be taken to reach the solution (answer: who, what, when, where, why and how)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

You may create a table, chart, video, or other presentation format to help with your presentation if you wish, but this is not necessary. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Depending on your presentation and plans, the teacher may ask for more detail, suggest some changes, or work with you to solve any obvious barriers to success with a goal to helping your team be successful. As you work on team projects, it is important that everyone knows and understands the progress that is being made and to stop and consider how it is going and whether or not you need to make any adjustments. This includes members of the team, as well as managers, clients, or others who have some interest in the project.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Your team will do this formally in week 5, by completing and submitting a progress report which will allow you to evaluate your own and your team\u2019s progress, and to make any necessary adjustments as you work toward your goal. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
The progress report has two parts:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Part 1: Team Report:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
This part of the report is a collaborative effort by the whole team<\/span><\/span>; everyone will contribute to one<\/span><\/span> document. In the report, you will compare the work that was planned to the work that was done, as well as comment on how well your plan is progressing and any changes\/adjustments you feel should be made. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
The progress reports will be a series of questions that your team answers. Try to be as informative and detailed as possible. It is very unusual for a project to reach successful completion without adjustments, so if changes to your planned steps are needed, consider these carefully. All team members will receive the same<\/span><\/span> mark for this portion of the progress report.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Part 2: Team Health Assessment:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
This part of the report is done individually<\/span><\/span>. Each team member will complete one confidential assessment about how well the group is functioning as a team. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
You will be marked individually and as part of your team, based on the quality and depth of your thinking and the detail of your answers and explanations. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
You will be asked to reflect on your own participation and learning as well as comment on the quality of participation by yourself and your teammates (and they will comment on yours). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Consider your ratings carefully and honestly and support your choice with an explanatory comment. An average of the ratings you receive from your teammates will become part of your individual grade.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Rating areas include:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This part of the assignment will allow you to showcase your work, and to present an objective assessment of your success. Did you meet your goal? If yes, what helped to make you successful? It is important to note that even if your team did not meet your goal, the purpose of this project was to try. You are being assessed on your plan, action, and depth of your assessment and reflection. In other words, even if your project all goes wrong, you can still be successful on the assignment itself.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
