The history of art - metal, visual, jewellery etc. involves a lot of images. <\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

But looking at an image doesn't necessarily mean you understand what you're looking at or know anything about it. In order to better understand art history it is important to be able to break down an image and analyze it, look for clues about it's origin and how it was made. <\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

Your compare and contrast assignments will help you develop those skills so that even if you don't know what the item is, or where it came from you'll be able to figure it out or at least make an educated guess. <\/p>\n\n

In order to better understand images we need to ask ourselves questions related to the piece.<\/p>\n\n

The four areas we look at, that were mentioned in the first class are:<\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

Age - how old it is and what other civilizations were doing at the same time?<\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

Sophistication - Is it a simple, round bowl or a complex fluted piece?<\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

Design - Are there similar motifs anywhere? Is the shape reflective of other styles\/other materials (eg. is the same type of vessel seen in clay?)<\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

Technique - What techniques did they use and how did they incormporate patterns? Did they use solder etc...?<\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

Sophistication - This seems less sophisticated than pieces we've seen from Sumer. This piece has only a chased design that does not look nearly as sophisticated as the Sumerian or Egyptian plate we've seen<\/p>\n\n

The Sumerian Plate we've seen has better chasing and also has repousse. <\/p>\n\n

This also seems less sophisticated than the Egyptian hollowware (vessels) we've seen. Design - There is a similarity of shape between the 1st vase and the Egyptian vessel - perhaps there was some influence here... <\/p>\n\n

The sophistication of design on the Egyptian piece seems more advanced and better made, however (notice that design and sophistication work together to give us a clearer understanding).<\/p>\n\n

Question 4<\/p>\n\n

Technique - Here we can use the same answer we've used for questions about design. <\/p>\n\n

There is a similarity of shape between the 1st vase and the Egyptian vessel in terms of ability to create this shape so the people who made the 1st vase had a sophisticated understanding of how to \"raise\" a vessel (make a vessel out metal from a sheet) <\/p>\n\n

And though this vase is not quite as sophisticated as the Egyptian vessel or the Sumerian vessel, because of the quality of the chasing, chasing is still used so this civilization had an understanding of chasing. Since it is not as sophisticated in design, perhaps it is older than the Egyptian work or the Sumerian work.<\/p>\n\n

While the 1st vase is similar in shape to the Egyptian one, the raising technique is not as good. <\/p>\n\n

The sophistication of shape and design seems to suggest that this civilization's metalworking capabilities are not as advanced as either Sumeria's or Egypt's because both Sumerian and Egyptian work show better chasing and repousse skill. <\/p>\n\n

This vase is only chased - perhaps they didn't know how to repousse?
