The chair this individual is using is not optimal for home office use. Instead, it should be replaced with an ergonomic chair that adjusts to the specific person using it. These adjustments include an adjustable backrest with lumbar support, seat height and armrests to ensure full body support and comfort (CCOHS, 2025a, pp. 2-4).<\/p>\n\n

Slouching in your seat is a very unsafe practice as it results in prolonged spinal compression, leading to lower back pain, and forces your neck to be bent upwards, causing neck and shoulder pain. Focus on maintaining a fully upright posture with your back supported to reduce the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders (CCOHS, 2025b, p. 2).<\/p>\n\n

The computer screen is not in an optimal position here, and will result in awkward, uncomfortable postures. A laptop stand should be introduced to this set-up to ensure that the top of the screen is positioned in line with their eyes, approximately 15 degrees below their horizontal gaze direction, and that is is approximately an arm's length away, with increasing the font size if needed. By ensuring the proper viewing angle and distance is maintained, this workstation will take another step in becoming ergonomic (CCOHS, 2025c, pp.1-4).<\/p>\n\n

Although we cannot see for sure if this individual's feet are firmly placeed against the floor or another surface, it is important to ensure your feet are not dangling above the ground. If they are, add in an ergonomic footrest that allows your lower body to remain in a natural position, and to allow for proper blood circulation that would otherwise be restricted by increased pressure on your hamstrings (Ergo, n.d.).<\/p>\n\n

Rather than using the built-in keyboard with your laptop, use a wireless external keyboard instead that offers ergonomic benefits. In this scenario, the laptop is positioned too far away (explored in another hotspot), which forces the body to lean forward, and using an external keyboard will allow you to position it so that it is closer to you so that your shoulders and elbows are relaxed and close to your body. While there are many different types of keyboards available on the market, the best choice for you will be to purchase one that allows for a neutral wrist position and and a keyboard layout where the keys are not too close or too far apart for your fingers to travel accross comfortably. Try to find one that offers height adjustment and a built-in wrist pad for added comfort and support, or purchase one separately if needed (CCOHS, 2025d, pp. 1-2).<\/p>\n\n

The extended use of your laptop's built-in trackpad can result in repitive strain injuries in your fingers. It is recommended to use an ergonomic mouse that fits your hand comfortably and allows for neutral positioning of your wrist while also placing more emphasis on using your arm more to move it around rather than exhausting the muscles in your hand and wrist. There are many different types of ergonomic mice to choose from, so simply choose the one that provides you with the most comfort. (CCOHS, 2025e, pp. 1-2).<\/p>\n\n
