Settler colonialism requires the displacement of Indigenous populations, and the assertion of control over the land, resources, and governance. \u200bExploitation colonialism occurs when a foreign colonizing power extracts resources, labor, and wealth from a colonized territory. This has happened\u2014and continues to happen\u2014in regions rich in natural resources, such as parts of Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. Exploitation colonialism does not require the colonial power to permanently settle, but its impacts are deeply devastating to both the people and the land. <\/p>\n\n

\u200bAlthough colonization disproportionately impacts Indigenous people, colonization is an issue that affects all students\u2014Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike. The ongoing legacy of colonization shapes the experiences of all individuals, how they see themselves, and how they perceive others. <\/p>\n\n

\u200bLike racial injustice, understanding the roots of colonial injustices requires recognizing that colonization is ongoing and pervasive. Colonization is not an event of the past. In the context of Canada, colonization continues as an unfinished and incomplete project. \u200bClimate colonialism refers to the exploitation of resources by wealthy nations at the ecological expense of countries in the Global South. In response to climate change within their own countries, wealthy nations in the Global North often outsource harmful extractive practices to regions in the Global South, including Africa and Latin America, further exacerbating environmental harm in these areas.<\/p>\n\n

\u200bIndigenous peoples around the world are on the frontlines of climate change, bearing the brunt of its devastating impacts.
