What kind of appeals do you respond to?<\/h2>\n\n
The premise of this quiz is a bit suspect. We all respond to different types of appeals, depending on the seriousness of the topic, the situation, the urgency of our response, or even how we're feeling on a given day.<\/p>\n\n
However, it is useful to start to think about what types of arguments we're used to responding to.  <\/p>\n\n
It helps us to defend ourselves<\/strong><\/span> from overly emotional arguments if we know that we tend to be easily swayed by appeals to pathos, for example.<\/p>\n\n
It also helps us to write better arguments.<\/strong><\/span> If we know we tend to respond to logical evidence, for example, we can branch out and purposely add some pathos and ethos to our writing to appeal to a wider audience. <\/p>\n\n

The appeal of this poster is based on the celebrity endorsement. If Darth Vader (who is powerful and arguably cool) can wear a mask, so can we. There are quite a few examples of this kind of endorsement where people have drawn superheroes in masks to make the point that wearing a mask is heroic, because of its association with these characters.<\/p>\n\n
This clearly isn't a logical argument based on evidence, nor is it necessarily emotional. The appeal is based on the source. <\/p>\n\n

The appeal to emotion here is based on our sense of neighbourly or civic duty. This is because of the way the source of the article makes claims of credibility as a source of medical information.<\/p>\n\n
It's also because of the reference to experts in the headline. This headline promises credible information from known experts. <\/p>\n\n
However, it's a good example of how most arguments use more than one appeal.
