How to Change Oil in a Few Easy Steps

When you change the car's oil, always check the owner's manual to verify the correct type of replacement oil, check the temperature needed to warm up the car's oil so that it drains out smoothly, and locate the car parts.

Materials Needed:

  • Owner's manual for oil type and diagrams
  • Used oil pan
  • Funnel to pour the oil

Warning: Wear protective equipment; the used oil may be hot and could burn you.

Steps:

  1. Start the vehicle and allow the engine to warm up for a minute. This allows the existing oil in the engine to warm up so that it drains out smoothly.
  2. Locate the oil drain plug and place a used oil pan on the ground directly beneath.
  3. Remove the oil drain plug to allow the used oil to drain completely. For a better flow, pull out the oil dipstick.
  4. Replace the drain plug before you pour the new oil with the help of the funnel.

Note: Dispose of used oil responsibly. Recycling centres are available in every province.
