Although you have joined the English for Academic Purposes program to develop your English language skills, learning only in a structured, formal environment can restrict your ability to use the language fluently in an authentic setting.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This project will let you test your speaking and listening skills in a \u2018real life\u2019 situation. Depending on your choice of activity, this assignment will help you meet the highlighted outcomes at a minimum, and could help you meet all remaining course requirements:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

To complete this task, you will find an opportunity in the community or at the College that is of interest to you. You can either volunteer for an activity or you can attend a workshop or presentation, but it must be an activity or event that anyone could do. To get the most out of your experience, take every possible opportunity to use your English language skills. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Activities must be finished before the beginning of week 6 unless the teacher approves an extended date in advance. After the event, you will prepare and give a 7-10 minute presentation about your experience and your learning. Note that you will be graded on your reflection about the experience, not on the activity\/participation itself.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Choice #1: Volunteer<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\n
If you choose this option, you will volunteer your time and energy at an event or with a charitable organization that will result in a positive impact.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
\n\t
This must be a new opportunity. In other words, if you already volunteer somewhere, you cannot use that experience for this project.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
Your total volunteer time must be between 2-3 hours (time includes training, if needed).<\/span><\/span>\n\t
\n\t\t
You may do one activity that meets the time requirement or do more than one activity that adds up to the time requirement.<\/span><\/span>\n\t\t
\n\t\t\t
You are welcome and encouraged to do more activities\/time than required.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t<\/ul>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
Note: This is the better option if you are able to choose it. It not only will allow you to use more of your English-language skills, but you will also be able to add this participation to your resume as Canadian experience.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Choice #2: Attend a Live Workshop or Presentation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\n
If you choose this option, you will attend a live workshop or presentation. You can attend in person or online, but it must be primarily a listening activity with the opportunity for the audience to ask questions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This must be a new opportunity. In other words, if you are already taking another course or program at the same time as EAP, you cannot use that experience for this project.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
You may not use a religious service or event for this experience.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
The presentation\/workshop must be between 1-3 hours long (time includes question period).<\/span><\/span>\n\t

Is it a one-time event (i.e. a 5 km walk to raise money for a specific cause) or an ongoing opportunity (i.e. visiting seniors in a nursing home)?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t

Do you need to have a criminal reference check completed?<\/span><\/span>\n\t

This is often required if you wish to volunteer with children or vulnerable adults and may take 2-3 weeks to get results.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t<\/ul>\n\t<\/li>\n\t

Once you have chosen your activity, complete the form and submit it to your teacher for approval. This step is to ensure that the activity you are doing meets the requirements of the course, and that we know you are participating in a safe opportunity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Reflect on your experience and, using the rules for formal outlines (Reference: Text page 116), prepare an outline of your presentation (presentations must be 7-10 minutes long).
