Categorizing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) Treatments<\/span><\/p>\n\n
CTS treatments can be divided into two different categories: non-invasive treatments <\/strong>(which which do not involve tools that physically enter the body) and invasive treatments<\/strong> (which do <\/em>involve tooks that physically enter the body). Non-Invasive Treatment 1: Wrist Splints<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n
As CTS is a musculoskeletal disorder that can result from repeated and extreme flexions and extensions of the wrist, the purpose of wrist splinting is to immobilize the wrist in a neutral position in order to decrease these movements, thus subsequently decreasing the symptoms of pain, numbness, and paresthesia that they cause. They are often prescribed as a first line of treatment and to only be worn at night.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Invasive Treatment 1: Surgery<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n
Surgery is often recommended as a treatment for CTS when the aforementioned treatments have no positive effects on relieving a patient\u2019s symptoms and\/or when a patient\u2019s CTS is classified as severe upon diagnosis. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>The technique for traditional open surgery involves making a longitudinal palmar incision that is up to two inches in length. Following this, an opening is made in the flexor retinaculum (also known as the TCL) with a scalpel, which relieves pressure on the median nerve as it runs through the carpal tunnel. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
