There are now a number of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools accessible to students. ChatGPT is one example of a generative AI tool; there are many other tools out there. ChatGPT produces strings of text generated using probabilities based on its training from the Internet and users. Remember: ChatGPT is not <\/strong>a search engine or a researcher; ChatGPT is a chatbot <\/strong>trained to produce human-like responses to prompts.  <\/p>\n\n
It is important to be aware of the following issues associated with ChatGPT: <\/p>\n\n

Academic integrity<\/strong>: You must talk to your instructor before using any generative AI tool for schoolwork<\/strong>. Follow your instructor\u2019s guidelines. Using unauthorized material, aids or software (like generative AI) during the preparation of an assignment is an academic incident <\/a>at Conestoga College.<\/p>\n\t<\/li>\n\t

Veracity<\/strong>: Verify anything generated is correct. ChatGPT can produce inaccurate information or incorrect citations (called hallucinations).  <\/p>\n\t<\/li>\n\t

When paraphrasing or summarizing material that continues over a few sentences (we recommend 2-3 sentences max ), cite the source in the first sentence<\/strong>. If context makes it clear that the paraphrase continues over multiple sentences, there is no need to repeat the citation. If you switch sources, make sure to repeat citation where necessary to ensure sources are clear. <\/p>\n\n
Example of a Long Paraphrase<\/strong><\/p>\n\n
Feminist activism was an essential component in Egypt\u2019s twentieth-century national liberation movement (Prashad, 2007, pp. 54-55)<\/span>. While leaders like Huda Sha\u2019rawi, Ceza Nabaroui, and Nabawiya Musa used their class privilege to agitate for women\u2019s franchise, Prashad argued<\/span> this work also served to undermine aspects of colonial control in Egypt. Without their agitation, not much would have been achieved.<\/p>\n\n

Some professors prefer that students include a page number when paraphrasing <\/strong>material, even if it is not a requirement of APA style. Always make sure to check with your instructor if you are unsure about expectations.  <\/p>\n\n
We want to point this out because you may have noticed while reading articles that the third element of the citation, the page number or specific location information, is often missing. Take a look at this article<\/a>\u2014not a page number in sight. <\/p>\n\n
In APA 7th edition, it is not mandatory to include the page number for paraphrased <\/strong>material. On the other hand, for quoted <\/strong>material, it is mandatory to include the page or location information. <\/p>\n\n
Since most articles in APA style primarily utilize paraphrasing to build on previous research, you often won\u2019t see many page numbers listed in academic citations. Please note that it isn\u2019t wrong to include the page numbers in citations for paraphrases and summaries, but it is not a requirement of APA 7th edition.<\/p>\n\n
