Paying attention to what we read is difficult because all human beings have a very short attention span<\/strong> for things that don't move. This is why I've tried to insert little activities into all of these presentations. Otherwise, they're deadly boring. <\/p>\n\n

Step 1: Previewing<\/h2>\n\n
Previewing a text involves looking at specific aspects or features of a text before we start to read it<\/strong>. The point here is to try to guess<\/strong> what the text is about. In this way, we set up expectations for what we might find as we read.<\/p>\n\n
The beautiful thing about this is that it only takes a few minutes, and it doesn't matter if we're right or wrong<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n
Previewing a text turns reading into a game where we are constantly saying either \"yeah, I called that\" or \"whoa, that surprised me\" as we read. Either way, it's enough to keep us engaged. You'd be surprised how effective it is.<\/p>\n\n

The highest impact reading strategies go beyond highlighting or underlining because they focus not just on what<\/strong> the author is saying, but on why<\/strong> the author is saying it. They focus not only on saying \"hey, this is important!\", but actually say how and why<\/strong> something is important.  <\/p>\n\n
And these strategies involve annotating<\/strong><\/span> the text.<\/p>\n\n
Annotations are little notes<\/strong> you write to yourself (or your future self, if you're going to need to study or use a text). They typically appear in the margins.<\/p>\n\n
This is what we practise when we use digital annotation tools like NowComment<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and hypothesis<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. They work because they force you to actually engage with what you're reading. You can't annotate a text while daydreaming. Patterns of Organization<\/h2>\n\n
These are logical structures authors use to organize their information so that it makes sense to audiences, and to emphasize their meaning.<\/p>\n\n
For example, if I wanted to create a convincing blog post about defunding the police, I would probably elaborate the reasons why<\/strong> reform is necessary. I'd also have to make the case that defunding would have pro-social results<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n
To accomplish this, I'd use a basic cause\/effect<\/strong><\/span> pattern. <\/p>\n\n
Recognizing this allows a reader to unlock the logic of the text<\/strong>, to identify the most important points in the reading. Instead of just underlining something improtant, you'd be able to write \"cause #1\", \"most important cause\", or \"effect #1\" in the margins, which leaves a clearer trace behind of your thinking as you read.<\/p>\n\n

Most texts have a dominant pattern, plus authors will use other patterns to make specific points within their texts. <\/p>\n\n
To use the example of a text about defunding the police, cause\/effect<\/strong> might be the dominant pattern. <\/p>\n\n
However, comparing<\/strong> how a police officer and a mental health professional might approach a wellness check could be a strong argument. <\/p>\n\n

Claims are specific to arguments. They are the most important statements in any argument, and include the main claim, or thesis, as well as subclaims or reasons why an author has taken a position.<\/p>\n\n
This means that they are distinct from other types of sentences, like facts and opinions. <\/p>\n\n

Rebuttal or counterargument is another structure specific to arguments. <\/p>\n\n
This is when a writer includes arguments on the opposing side. However, they do this only to show that these are weak arguments, or to show that their own point of view makes more sense.<\/p>\n\n
For example, in our blog post on defunding the police, we might make space for some of the arguments on the other side, like the idea that reducing the police budget could result in an increase in crime.  <\/p>\n\n

Step 3: Activating the knowledge<\/h2>\n\n
Now that you've previewed<\/strong><\/span> the text to set up reasonable expectations about what you'll find in the reading in Step 1, and read the text actively<\/strong><\/span>, noting the patterns of organization and components of argument in your annotations in Step 2, you're ready to activate your new knowledge<\/strong><\/span> so you can remember and count on it moving forward.<\/p>\n\n
In many of your courses, this is easy. After reading or listening to a lecture or video about a piece of editing software, you can use the software<\/strong>. After reading about how to fill in a call sheet for a shoot, you can, for example, fill in a call sheet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n
Practicing what you've learned will help to cement the knowledge in your long-term memory so you carry it with you.<\/p>\n\n

When you know that you have to carry the knowledge of a reading forward with you, to study for an exam, or to use a text in an essay, presentation or report, you can pull out all of the stops.<\/p>\n\n
The most intense way of integrating new information is to paraphrase<\/strong> and\/or summarize<\/strong> the text.<\/p>\n\n
Paraphrasing<\/strong><\/span> is taking the essence of the meaning of a short passage, and then explaining it in your own words.  <\/p>\n\n
Summarizing<\/strong><\/span> is first figuring out the gist or main point of a larger passage or longer text, and then explaining it in your own words.<\/p>\n\n
