When working with or creating Open Educational Resources you may decide that you want to include the students work. It is essential that you have an honest conversation regarding the benefits, barriers and possible risks associated with openly publishing educational materials. Accessibility, platforms, software and hosting should be discussed with the students to address any concerns they may have. Specifically in regards their personal information, particularly if something is being stored outside of Canada. Are their alternative options available if as student has concerns? According to copyright laws, all original work created by students are protected by copyright and students must authorize any and all further use of their work before it can be used or shared.<\/p>\n\n

As students own the work they create, their work cannot be photocopied or reproduced in any way without their permission. Student authors can refuse to share their work with other students. The original work could be circulated in a physical classroom but not reproduced to share. <\/p>\n\n

It is important to note that if a student is creating work under a contract or agreement with their instructor or the institution, copyright will be determined by the terms of that contract or agreement. The following are some suggestions for engaging students in the creation of open educational resources. <\/p>\n\n

Discuss the benefits and risks of engaging in open work and explain why you are asking them to openly publish their work <\/li>\n\t
Explain how intellectual property works and the student's rights<\/li>\n\t
Review the options for choosing an open license <\/li>\n\t
Provide options for to share or not to share their work publicly <\/li>\n\t

There are many times that higher education continues to reinforce exisiting societal hierarchies, despite our claims to focus on equity, diversity, decolonization and indigenization. When creating opportunities for open educational resources it is essential that we remember to include marginalized voices whenever possible. Dr. Brenna Clarke Gray recommends that we enact and demonstrate care by understanding the context of any open project including what situational details, what power dynamics and what pre-existing relationships might get it the way of making the most ethical choice. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
She is also proposing that we review open with the five W\u2019s <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Open for Who? - Who benefits from the project? How are participants of different backgrounds and disability status included? How are power dynamics managed? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
What protections are in place?- can participants choose how open their work is? Who will house the project and for how long? Has their been a full discussion on what working in the open can look and feel like? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Where is the material stored? - We have an ethical responsibility to maintain control over participant data and contributions. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
When can participants opt out? - Is there a process for participants to change their minds? What happens when the project is over? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Why is this open? - What does open offer to this project, to the participants at this moment? Will this project be better because it is open?
