In most institutional settings, you will encounter tablets in unit dose packaging, as with this example. This type of packaging is clear on one side, to allow the nurse to see the tablet(s) inside, and labelled on the other side. The red arrow is pointing to the name of the drug<\/span>, and this will usually be the generic name. The green arrow is pointing to the dose per tablet (dose on hand)<\/span>. The blue arrow is pointing to an expiry date and lot number<\/span>. You may also be required to read multi-dose packaging. Here's an example of an oral solid medication in multidose packaging. The red arrow is pointing to the generic name<\/span> of the medication. Sometimes, you will also see the trade name of the medication on the packaging, but more often, you will only see the generic name. The green arrow <\/span>is pointing to the dose<\/span> of each tablet. The blue arrow is pointing to the DIN<\/span>, or drug identification number<\/span>. Every drug has its own drug identification number. You don't usually need to worry about the DIN, since that is information the pharmacist uses for dispensing. When calculating a drug dosage, you can use either of these as your dose on hand and vehicle. The blue arrow is pointing to how much medication in total<\/span> is contained in this vial. The pink arrow is pointing to the area which would normally contain a lot number and expiration date<\/span>. The purple arrow is pointing to the DIN<\/span>. That's a lot of information in a small space, and it can be difficult to read. Sometimes, a nurse must reconstitute a powdered medication with a fluid before administering it. In such a situation, the label (see red arrow<\/span>) will provide instructions for which fluid and how much fluid to add to the powder to give the dose on hand. For example, this medication instructs the nurse to add 2 mL of sterile water to the powder to obtain the correct concentration .<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

You will learn more about reconstitution in future lab classes, so for now, just take note of the reconstituted dose, which will be presented as units\/millilitre.
