Welcome! <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n
This resource was designed for students preparing for or thinking about engaging in Transnational Service Learning (TSL). This resource draws directly from the work of Dr.<\/span> Jessica Vorstermans<\/span><\/strong><\/a> and Dr. Katie McDonald<\/strong><\/span><\/a> on building mutuality and relationships with host families and communities during service-learning experiences. <\/span><\/p>\n\n
Katie and Jessica are academics engaged in research about TSL but also worked as practitioners for a long time in a small TSL organization called Intercordia Canada. In our work with hosts - those who care for and work with students who travel to the Global South - it was overwhelmingly clear that host families and community members spoke about their encounters with student participants in Intercordia as relationships of mutuality (MacDonald & Vorstermans, 2015). Hosts told us that they engaged in the program because it allowed for or made space for encounters of mutuality, a time to learn from one another, share more about each other\u2019s world and build relationships. It became evident that what host families experienced and wanted from these encounters was not what mainstream global citizenship and international experiential education and volunteering overseas programming for university students from the Global North were fostering or enabling. From this research study, we determined that the following themes were important for hosts in the Global South: Mutuality in relationships, benefits of social capital (two-way flow of benefits, not just benefits for participants from the North) and the sharing of world views (MacDonald & Vorstermans, 2015). <\/span><\/p>\n\n
Throughout this resource, you will reflect on and think critically about your position as a student entering the home and communities of host families. You will think about your own intersectional identity, lived experiences, and thoughts about service learning. How can we ensure that gender is central to your service learning experience? We know of students who committed to connecting with their host mother and taking on a part of the labour of the home, for example, always washing up after dinner or helping with laundry on the day laundry is done. One of the hosts we spoke to in Ghana told us that: students are coming to a home away from home. It is your home while you are there, but it is not like the home you are coming from! You most likely want to experience something different than your own life, and that is why you are engaged in a TSL experience! BUT, experiences of difference are hard, and those you are living with will undoubtedly absorb the rockiness of your transition into their home and community. We asked hosts about what they want YOU to know before you arrive to live and work with them.
