Is a biological process that helps maintain stability in the body's internal environment<\/p>\n\t<\/li>\n\t

Throughout, the homeostatic process follows a similar mechanism that include these vital components: <\/p>\n\n\t
\n\t\t

Stimuli:<\/strong> a deviation from the set point<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\t\t
\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t
set point: a physiological value that represents stability in the body's internal environment<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t
\n\t\t
Sensors\/Receptors: <\/strong>the sensors\/receptors in the skin detect this deviation and relay this information to the control center<\/p>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t
\n\t\t
Control Center: <\/strong>the control center( the Central Nervous System) processes the stimuli ( its information) and determines a plausible response to either revert ( negative feedback loop) or promote ( positive feedback loop) its effects<\/p>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t

Effectors:<\/strong> the effectors are in a way the \"actors\" of the homeostatic process, which conduct the process determined by the control center <\/p>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t<\/ul>\n\t<\/li>\n\t

Positive Feedback Loop <\/strong>is a homeostatic mechanism adopted by many speacial proccesses in the body, that help intensify the effects of the stimuli, rather than revert them! <\/p>\n\t<\/li>\n\t

A \"famous\" Example: LABOR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\t
\n\t\t
\n\t\t
During child labor, <\/strong>the fetus ( developed baby) pushes against the mother's cervix as it progresses towards delivery<\/p>\n\n\t\t
\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t
Cervix: a canal in the lower region of the uterus, that has a prominent role and changes during the process of childbirth<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t
\n\t\t
As the baby pushes against the cervix, there are neuronal signals that are being sent to the hypothalamus to promote the release of Oxytocin in the mothers body<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\t\t
\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t
Oxytocin: <\/strong>a hormone released by the posterior pituitary gland that promotes uterine muscle contractions <\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t
\n\t\t
From this, the positive feedback loop assures that this process continues until completion, which in this case means until the baby has been delivered. <\/p>\n\n\t\t
\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t
The positive feedback loop intensifies the stimuli, which in this case is the release of oxytocin, which then intensifies and accelerates the uterine contractions, further promoting childbirth! <\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t<\/ul>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

Now<\/strong> that we know how blood glucose concentration levels are maintained in a normal healthy individual, we now will focus on what happens in an individual with Diabetes\n\n\t

Diabetes occurs when the relationship between the hormone insulin and the negative feedback loop is disrupted through damage of the pancreas via the immune system<\/li>\n\t\t
There are two main different conditions that can occur: \n\t\t
\n\t\t\t
Type 1 Diabetes: <\/strong>when the pancreas does not produce a sufficient amount of insulin, or none at all, for it to optimally function and restore stability<\/li>\n\t\t\t

What's the big deal? <\/p>\n\n\t

Diabetes is a problem as this causes blood glucose concentration levels to remain high for long periods of time! <\/p>\n\n\t\t
\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t
As insulin is not able to perform its function, or atleast optimally, there is no absorption of glucose from the muscle cells, fat cells. This prevents these very important cells from recieving glucose, and since glucose is an important source of energy, it impedes optimal function as well. <\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t
High levels of blood glucose concentrations has its own side effects:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
frequent urination <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
dehydration <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t
