The social service work relationship is mutual and collaborative. Both helper and helpee are activie participants with the belief that clients have a right to choose and determine course of actios that lead them to their goals and objectives. Our work draws on theory from social sciences and social work\/social service work practice.<\/p>\n\n

College members adhere to these principles in their relationships with clients by ensuring mutual participation, increasing the ability of people to determine, create and sustain change, and honoring self-determination. They do this by acting as resources, provide support for clients to decide which areas of challenge they would like to work on, and accept each person's uniqueness.<\/p>\n\n

A purpose for the relationship is clearly identified.<\/p>\n\n

Within the relationship is the responsiblity to observe, clarify and inquire. This is done while being aware of our own values, attitudes and needs and how the impact our relationships with clients. <\/p>\n\n

Client needs are paramount and always kept in focus within the professional relationship. It is our responsiblity to be aware of and manage organizational mandates and functions as well as how they may impact as well as limit our professional relationships. The code of ethics requires that we maintain competence (abiltiy)<\/strong> and integrity (honesty) <\/strong>within our practice. <\/p>\n\n

Competence<\/strong> requires that we remain committed to ongoing learning and professional development, operate within our scope of practice, and ensure that we are: <\/p>\n\n

aware of the extent and parameters of competence, professional scope of practice, and limit practice accordingly<\/p>\n\t<\/li>\n\t
\n\t
remain current and participate in ongoing learning regarding emerging issues and knowledge as it relates to legistation, policy, services, and programs in the area of their practice.<\/p>\n\t<\/li>\n\t

make professional recommendations based on evidedence based practice supported by a credible body of social work\/social service work knowledge.<\/p>\n\t<\/li>\n\t

engage in a process of self review, evaluation of practice, and seek consultation when appropriate.<\/p>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
Integrity<\/strong> means we understand that helpers are in a position of power and responsibility to all clients and take steps to ensure that clients are protected from the abuse of such power during and after the provision of professional services.<\/p>\n\n
\"College members establish and maintain clear and appropriate boundaries in professional relationships for the protection of clients. Boundary violations include sexual misconduct and other misuse and abuse of the member's power. Non-sexual boundary violations may include emotional, physical, social and financial violations. Members are responsible for ensuring that appropriate boundaries are maintained in all aspects of professional relationships.\" (OCSWSSW, 2018,p.14)<\/p>\n\n
Social service workers are knowledgeable and sensitive to cultural and ethnic diversity and to forms of social injustice such as poverty, discrimination and imbalances of power that exist in the culture and that affect clients.<\/p>\n\n
We do not:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

engage in relationships that would constitute a conflict of interest <\/strong>(concerns or aims of two parties are incompatible or competing) because we are aware of and watch for this, seek out consultation and support when we are unsure, avoid them, and take steps to declare them if and when they happen then manage them. We do this by addressing the conflict of interest or eliminating it. <\/li>\n\t
have sexual relationships with clients, former clients, or with any person with whom the relationship may pose or lead to a conflict of interest<\/li>\n\t
use information gained in the professional relationship for our own gain, to extort, abuse or manipulate<\/li>\n\t
seek or use information from clients for our own gain - directly or indirectly<\/li>\n\t
engage in pracitce while under the influence of substance or suffering from illnees or dysfunction<\/li>\n\t
misrepresent qualifications<\/li>\n\t

This principle refers to the responsiblities of service provision and delivery. Social servie workers strive to provide service to all tand do so in a timely and informed manner. This means you can desribe the nature of the service or program, any limitations, as well as answer questions and clarify the nature of the services delivered and the professional relationship. <\/p>\n\n
It is your role to advise of risks, rights, opportuities as well as obligations as they relate to the provision of services. <\/p>\n\n
Social service workers do not discriminate against anyone based on race, ethnicity, language, religion, marital status, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, economic status, political affiliation or national origin.(OCSWSSW, p.16)<\/p>\n\n
In a situation where a personal relationship does occur between the member and a client or former client, it is the member, not the client or former client, who assumes full responsibility for demonstrating that the client or former client has not been exploited, coerced or manipulated, intentionally or unintentionally.(OCSWSSW, p.16)<\/p>\n\n
You have a responsibility to terminate services with a client when they are no longer needed, required or requested. Termination is to be done appropriately. This principle in the code of ethics details informaton about documentation and recording. <\/p>\n\n
The purpose of the social service work record is to document services in a recognizable form in order to ensure the continuity and quality of service, to establish accountability for and evidence of the services rendered, to enable the evaluation of service quality, and to provide information to be used for research and education. College members ensure that records are current, accurate, contain relevant information about clients and are managed in a manner that protects client privacy and in accordance with any applicable privacy and other legislation. (OCSWSSW, p.19)<\/p>\n\n

As a social service worker you agree to \"...respect the privacy of clients by holding in strict confidence all information about clients and by complying with any applicable privacy and other legislation. College members disclose such information only when required or allowed by law to do so or when clients have consented to disclosure\"(OCSWSSW, 2018, p.27).<\/p>\n\n
You must comply with privacy legislation, advise clients of what confidentiality is, how it will apply in your helping relationship, and when you will be required to break confidentiality as per the limits of confidentiality (danger to self, others, or knowledge of a minor being harmed). <\/p>\n\n
You will not share information about your client without expressed written permission. You are able to explain to clients the nature of public (readily available to the general public and would not harm client) and private (confidential) information. You can discuss openly with clients how you will protect their information, and how you will use any information about them in consultation\/supervision. <\/p>\n\n

Advertising is intended to inform and educate the public about available social work and social service work services. College members ensure that advertisements are compatible with the standards and ethics of the social work and social service work professions.(OCSWSSW, p. 33) See document for more detail. <\/p>\n\n
If you are registered with the college you may use the title of social service worker and place the initials RSSW after your name.<\/p>\n\n

The influence of the professional relationship on clients continues\/endures long after the relationship has terminated. College members are aware of the potential for conflict of interest and abusive treatment of clients within the professional relationship.<\/p>\n\n
Behaviour of a sexual nature by a College member toward a client represents an abuse of power in the professional relationship.<\/p>\n\n
College members do not engage in behaviour of a sexual nature with clients.(OCSWSSW, p. 38)<\/p>\n\n
You are responsible, as the member\/SSW for ensuring that sexual misconduct does not occur and as such you do not engage in the following with clients: <\/p>\n\n
\n\t
sexual intercourse, or other forms of physical sexual acts<\/li>\n\t
sexual touching and\/or comments\/remarks or behaviour of a sexual nature<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
You may not provide service to a former sexual partner, and \"... members do not have sexual relations with any person where those relations, combined with the professional relationship, would create a conflict of interest\" (OSCWSSW, p. 39).<\/p>\n\n
If you develop sexual feelings for a client it is your responsiblity to seek out professional consulation\/supervision and develop an appropriate plan.<\/p>\n\n
If a clients initiates sexual advances, it is the responsibility of the social service worker to state clearly that this is not appropriate in the professional relationship.<\/p>\n\n
