  You will be part of a small group of students who will each analyze a specific problem, make recommendations, and discuss each other\u2019s ideas with the goal of reaching a consensus. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
  Your task is in two parts. On your own, you will analyze a detailed scenario and prepare a short presentation with your own recommendations. Then, you will meet with a small group of classmates to present your ideas, hear their ideas, and then discuss each other\u2019s points of view so that you a reach a consensus (one final recommendation). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

  When you meet with your teammates you will take turns giving the presentation you prepared in part 1. While another student is speaking, you may take notes. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
  After each team member has made a presentation, the team must first agree on the most important problem to be solved. Once you have agreed on this, you will discuss each other\u2019s ideas with the goal of determining best solution.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

  As a team member, you must try to understand the recommendations made by your teammates, as well as their reasons, and to also make your own ideas clear. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
  If someone has an opposing idea, you will need to try to convince that person that your idea is better, and why this is the case and\/or to explore the new idea and form an opinion about it.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

  You are part of a team of workplace mediators. Your job is to help solve difficult problems and conflicts within companies\/organizations. In other words, when others can\u2019t solve a problem, you are hired as an outside consultant to help them reach a solution that will work best for them. Sometimes, if the problem is particularly difficult, you work as a team with a few of your co-workers to try to solve the problem together.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
  McKay & Montoya Ltd. is a local company that has an issue they cannot resolve themselves, and they have hired you and your fellow mediators to help them solve their problem. The president of McKay & Montoya has sent each of you this summary of the situation: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

  We are a civil engineering firm responsible for building large residential and commercial buildings. We have 3 main sections:<\/p>\n\n

  This is the team that actually builds the buildings. Once a contract is negotiated by the planning and development department, it is passed on to the construction team. The construction team must develop the architectural plans, order all necessary supplies, hire workers, and build the building within the budget and within the timeframes that have been negotiated by the planning and development department.<\/li>\n\t<\/ul>\n\t<\/li>\n\t
  Finance Department:\n\t
  \n\t\t
  This department is responsible for watching the budgets for the various projects, ensuring that workers are paid on time, paying bills for supplies and other costs, and making sure that the company earns a healthy profit each year.<\/li>\n\t<\/ul>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
  I have noticed that the 3 sections have not been working well together lately. When problems arise on a project, each section seems to blame one of the other sections for the issue.<\/p>\n\n
  For example, the finance department will complain that the construction team is spending so much on supplies and workers for a project that the company is losing profit. The construction team says that it\u2019s really the planning and development department\u2019s fault for not charging enough for the contract. The planning and development department blames both finance and construction for not giving them accurate numbers to work with, and so on.<\/p>\n\n
  I have noticed that these disagreements are becoming more frequent, everyone is unhappy and good employees are starting to leave the company because they don\u2019t like the work environment. Worse, customers are starting to notice, and we have lost several new contracts as a result.<\/p>\n\n
  I have met with the managers of these departments and offered ideas, but nothing has changed.
