Welcome to the Investigative Process course. I am excited to share this learning experience with you and look forward to getting to know everyone over the course of the semester.<\/p>\n\n

We will be covering a lot of interesting material related to the investigative process, report writing, interviewing techniques, different forms of investigation, and we will also explore some of the more unique and dynamic areas that relate to the memory process and eyewitness psychology. <\/p>\n\n

Class participation will be essential in order to succeed in this course, so please ensure you let me know if you are unable to attend during a group event.<\/p>\n\n

Like all other courses, all communication for this course will be through Blackboard, so please ensure that you check it often and that you monitor the student email address assigned to you.<\/p>\n\n

If you require any type of accommodation to assist with your learning please let me know as soon as possible so that a formal accommodation plan can be established.<\/p>\n\n

Greetings!<\/span><\/p>\n\n

As mentioned in my other course introductions, this is my 2nd year teaching at Georgian, so I am still getting accustomed to things. I am excited to share this course with you since it is a very interesting area of study. During the course of my career I completed several in-depth investigations and while completing my MSc Forensic Psychology my main area of study focused on Investigative Interviewing and Eyewitness Identification. I am looking forward to exploring these topics more in-depth with you over the semester and we will look at some detailed case studies of good and not so good practices. This is a very interesting area to study, as you will see the investigation process is widely used in multiple industries, and the information you will acquire will illustrate how applicable these skill sets are to the field of security management. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As previously mentioned, I come from a Military background and served for 25 years with the Canadian Armed Forces Military Police Branch, with a background in policing, security and counter-intelligence. I started off my career as a Private, retired as a Captain and was posted to following places :<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

- Chilliwack, BC (1990-94),<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

- Red Deer, AB (1994-95),<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

- Kingston, ON (1995-2003),<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

- North Bay, ON, (2003 - 07),<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

- Toronto, ON (2007-10), <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

- Borden, ON (2010-11) and<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

- 3 years overseas in Germany at the NATO Air Base in Gielenkirchen, Germany (2011 - 14).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Throughout my career I have worked in a variety of positions including: General Duty Police Patrols, Physical Security, Investigations, Court Liaison, Community Services, Counter-Intelligence as well as being a Detachment Commander responsible for up to 150 security\/police personnel and I have served on 3 International deployments with NATO and the United Nations (Kosovo, Sudan and Afghanistan). <\/p>\n\n

Some of the highlights of my career include serving as the Project Security Officer for a multi-million dollar NORAD Headquarters (HQ) Modernization program while posted to North Bay between 2003-2007 where I oversaw all of the physical security requirements during the construction of the new NORAD HQ, serving with the United Nations in Sudan as the Team Leader for a Multi-National Military Observer, as well as serving with NATO E-3A AWACS fleet in Geilenkirchen, Germany as the Headquaters Security Officer. <\/p>\n\n

Upon retirement in 2014, I accepted a 2 yr contract with NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium to oversee Access Control and Security to the New NATO Headquarters Construction Site and was responsible for over 135 security posts on a daily basis. In 2016, I relocated to Toronto and accepted a position within National Defence at Defence Research and Development Canada as the Head of Security for the Toronto Research Centre and accepted my current position at Georgian College in August 2019.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Course Description<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n

In this course students will examine the roles and responsibilities of the investigator and the essential steps necessary to conduct a professional investigation. Students have the opportunity to practice investigative skills necessary to acquire critical information from victims, <\/span><\/span>witnesses, suspects and crime scenes. Crime scene preservation and techniques used to collect various forms of physical evidence are also examined.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As we will explore and discuss in depth over the course of the next two semesters, effective communication is essential to ensure success, especially when working within an on-line delivery format and as such there are some communication basics that I would like to address to ensure that we are all on the same level of understanding and expectation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Typically, I try to respond to any inquires as rapidly as possible, although there may be times where it may take some time to get back to you. Seeing that this is an online format, I remain very flexible in sending and receiving email inquiries and will do my best to reply within 12 hrs of receiving your inquiry. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
From a courtesy\/professional perspective, email communication is a pet-peeve of mine, so please take that type to properly format your emails to include:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
\n\t
a greeting;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
meaningful context in the body of the email;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
a closing statement; and<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\t
your name.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
Does this take a few extra minutes\u2026.yes, but it also conveys a level of professional consideration and courtesy in relation to the nature of the communication. Communicating informally with a \"one word\" reply between friends about meeting for coffee might be sufficient in a text, but when it comes to formal communicating related to course related matters I expect a more formal approach, which is a habit that will serve you well when communicating with potential employers down the road.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
If you send me an email inquiry and any of the above criteria are missing don't be surprised if I don't reply or if you receive an equally cryptic reply back which will delay the process, so please ensure that you take the time from the start to develop good email etiquette and enhance your ability to communicate effectively.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
