Fruits are roundish nutlets covered with husk which has yellow matted hairs on the outside. 4 ridges extending below a short sharp tip. Very bitter. Bark is smooth.<\/span><\/li>\n\t

Leaf scars flat on upper margin, edged with a pad of hairs. The pith is reddish brown. The male pollen flowers \u201ccatkins\u201d. The female seed flowers erect in clusters of 4-7.<\/span><\/li>\n\t
The tapered oblong fruit is covered with gland-tipped, sticky hairs. The seeds are sweet, edible, very oily. A large tree, can grow from 50 to 75\u2019 and 150 years old. Has a straight trunk, the crown is open, rounded, with a few large ascending branches. Very fast grower. Prefers deep, rich, moist soils; but can tolerate many soil conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n\t
The leaves are alternate, pinnately compound, (14-23 leaflets); often terminal leaflet missing. Leaves have a strong citrus scent when crushed. Middle leaflets are larger than those at either end of the leaf. Turning yellow in fall. Buds are pale gray, slightly hairy.
