A premise is a \"true or false\"\/\"yes or no\" statement that you use to make a claim. For example, one premise states: \"all swans are white<\/strong>,\" and the other states that \"Jill is a swan<\/strong>.\" If we look at the first premise, we can see that the premise is actually false (check out the picture!)<\/p>\n\n
The image of a black swan means that the first premise - all swans are white<\/em> - is invalid<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Inferences are your \"connecting\" pieces. Like premises, inferences too can be invalid because they are assumptions<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n
The second premise - Jill is a swan<\/em> <\/strong>- forces us to infer that someone has named a specific swan \"Jill.\" Since I cannot verify that assertion, I cannot apply my yes\/no or true\/false criteria.<\/p>\n\n
In other words, I'm assuming<\/em> (inferring) based upon the relationship between the two premises and the conclusion that someone has named a swan Jill. If I were to then find out that Jill was, in fact, a dog, then the inference would be invalid<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

The conclusion is the take-away from the argument or the point that you are meant to reach by following the logic of the argument. <\/p>\n\n
The conclusion will often contain the words \"therefore\" or \"because\" since we are signaling a relationship between the premises and inferences. <\/p>\n\n
