The 2012 Building Code Compendium has been expressed as an objective based code and a prescriptive based code, but what is the difference?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Objective:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n

For example, a requirement that an exit not contain more than one percent of contaminated air in a fire situation is a performance requirement: it tells you what must be achieved to satisfy the code, not how to do it.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Prescriptive:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n

For example, a requirement that a swing-type door in a fire separation have a latch is purely prescriptive. It tells you exactly what must be done, in physical terms, to satisfy the Code. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In Division A \u2013 Compliance, Objectives and Functional Statements there is a section called \u2018Definitions of words and phrases (1.4.1.). Words in italics located in the Code are defined, (have a specific meaning, unless otherwise specified). When you come across the italicized word, take the time to ensure you understand the correct meaning. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The word \"and<\/span><\/strong>\" found at the end of the second last clause of a sentence with multiple clauses means the requirements of every<\/span><\/strong> clause applies to the sentence. For example:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

3.1.2.5. Group B, Division 3 Occupancies<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
